While We Were Boys In School

Punjab Public School, Nabha didn’t just offer education-it offered opportunities to everyone, even those who quietly waited in the shadows. My journey at PPS embodies the spirit of our school motto: “Onward and Upward.” With every challenge faced and every opportunity seized, I have not just risen but soared-proving that belief, encouragement, and a little courage can take you far beyond what you ever imagined.
Life changes with the seasons, but nothing beats the nostalgia of our school days. Those years were all about fun and freedom, spent with our “chuddy buddies” a term that perfectly captures our tight-knit group. Our hostel felt like Nabha Central Jail, especially when we were counting down to the next vacation, starting the very first day of school! Despite the longing for breaks, school life was magical. Living, laughing, and pulling pranks together made us closer than ever. Our school was our stage, where we had endless energy for mischief, always in good fun and never mean-spirited.
When Raghubir asked me to contribute to his memoir, I felt honoured. Reading his stories took me back fifty years, especially the Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver Medal Expedition to Srinagar. Raghubir’s praise for my cooking during that trip still warms my heart.
It’s great to see my friend now passionate about cooking. I hope he’ll share his culinary creations with us soon, bringing a taste of those good old days back to life!

Echoes of Yesterday: A School days Memoir

In the quiet corners of our hearts, stories take shape, often without us realising. When does our story truly begin? Is it with our first breath, or is it when we pause to reflect, finding meaning in the mundane?
In our younger years, life is a boundless adventure each day brims with new wonders and discoveries. As we grow, the world narrows, filled with studies, work, and responsibilities. We carry the weight of life’s demands, trying to balance our dreams with the needs of those we cherish.
Yet, amidst this bustle, a quiet yearning remains a wish for connection, for moments of stillness. Retirement, we think, offers respite, a chance to rest. But even then, the world pulls us back into its rhythm.
Upon retiring, I felt a gentle nudge towards reflection-a desire to share my story. Encouraged by my family, especially my son, I began to pen down my thoughts.
This book is a mosaic of moments from my past, particularly from my school days. These chapters are not in chronological order but are a collection of memories that linger vividly. Each tale offers a glimpse into a boarding school life from half a century ago.
So, here’s to the journey and the lessons learned. I hope these stories bring a smile to your face, just as they do to mine. Enjoy the read!
