ANTARGEET : SONG OF THE SOUL INTERVIEWS OF RENOWNED MUSICIANS

Dedication

“This book is respectfully dedicated to the sacred memory of those great departed personalities who could not see them in book form.”

Swapan Chaudhuri

This collection of interviews with prominent musicians is a labour of love, shared generously withus by an eminent educator and venerated musicologist. Music is an ephemeral art. We enjoy it in the moment. Afterward, it only lingers invisibly in our memory and nourishes our human soul, Artistes value live performance on stage, and the enjoy the immediacy of the applause and appreciation they gain from the audiences sitting in front. At best, gurus may preserve musical knowledge by teaching a select group of disciples in order to ensure the continuation of their gharana. In other words, a performing artist’s way of preserving music belongs mostly to the oraltradition. Except in commercial recording, music is studied largely as maukhik vidya, transferred across generations within the interpersonal framework of the guru-shishya parampara. This collection of interviews is unusual in this regard. It is intended to introduce individual musicians and their musical thinking to a general audience of students, teachers and scholar.
There could not be a more perfect individual for this valuable task than Vijay Shankar Mishra. Born in an illustrious family of musicians in Banaras, Mishra is heir to a musical legacy of 300 years for which the holy city is known. He learned the Banaras Baj of tabla from his father Tabla Shiromani Pandit Gama Maharaj, and his thoughts and discussions about music and musical histories is firmly based on his practical knowledge. Vijay Shankar Mishra is a passionate educator, a zealous promotor of music, and a tireless institution builder who has earned almost 100 prestigious awards. He has groomed many disciples and is invited as examiner for M.A. and Ph.D.at various national institutions. He has served as a member of the audition board for All India Radio and Doordarshan, and has been a jury for competitive youth festivals. Above all, Mishra is a prolific writer, with 18 books and over 7000 articles for national Hindi newspapers and magazines to his credit. He has written insightful life sketches of musicians, and published numerous, probing interviews of musicians. His essays are also translated in many other languages of India. Mishra is a disceming critic who writes with remarkable skill to interest a general audience and nourish their hunger for cultural knowledge. At conferences, he is known as an orator who impresses audience with profound learning and inimitable ease and wit. He is well-known shedding light on crucial, controversial and untouched topics of immense importance and relevance. In other words, this volume is put together by a true authority of music and music cultures of India.
In a context where it is hard to come by any serious discussion of music for a general reader, Mishra’s penetrating essays are a rare contribution. Going beyond a musician’s biography. Mishra’s interviews give us a glimpse of every musician’s training and background, as well as their thought process and vision for music. Using his own deep love and understanding of music, he frames pointed incisive questions to draw out the subtle details of the musician’s intellectual experiences, and reveals how music is finely woven into the emotional layers of their long and complex life. The collection will remain a valuable record for further study and reaearch, and an enjoyable read for anyone interested in the musical cultures of India. I sincerely wish Vijay Shankar Mishra will continue his noble mission of documentation in the future, and my blessings will always remain with him for that purpose.

“Pt. Vijay Shankar Mishra exhibits remarkable prowess in his writing. His dedication and profound knowledge are evident in every stroke of his pen. This literary masterpiece-‘Songs of the Soul’ promises readers a valuable journey, unveiling profound insights and enriching perspectives from it’s treasure trove. I extend my heartfelt wishes to him for his book.”
I have known Pt. Vijay Shankar Mishra ji for three decades. He is a multi-talented personality. I know him as a very good musicologist, writer and also an exponent of tabla from the Benaras gharana. As a person he is also an extraordinarily committed and dutiful person. He wrote lyrics for me quite a few times which I further composed and sang in projects “Gondwana Dawn”, “Journey towards Rising India”, “Bodh Gaya Mahotsav” and recently “Veer Meera: a musical on empowering women”, which has been very well received by the press and public. He wrote both the script and a couple of songs for this project. He is constantly working for the promotion of our Indian Classical music and other forms of art through his organisation “SAM”, and also giving awards and stages to numerous talented and renowned artists and encouraging many upcoming artists. Pt. Vijay Shankar Mishra ji has done a wonderful work for his book ‘Songs of the Soul’ and also took interviews of the 31 noted musicians. I pray to the Almighty to bless him with a long healthy life to continue his good work.

Preface

My expert readers, With the blessings of Lord Nataraja, Mother Saraswati and the Gurus, I am feeling immense joy in handing over to you my tenth book titled as “Songs of the Soul”, at the same time I am also saddened by the fact that some of the artists whose interviews are collected in this book could not see getting it published. It’s my fault.
This book contains interviews with 31 musicians. I have tried my best to collect some information which may prove useful for the musicians. But my ability and my knowledge are also very limited. Still, I have full confidence that I will not be deprived of your love.
This conversation originally took place in Hindi language. But, one day the famous singer Professor Trupti Vatve told me that if this conversation was published in English, more people would benefit. Especially those people who do not know Hindi language at all. I also told him that today Hindi is the fourth most spoken language in the world. But, she stuck to her point and translated the 25 interviews collected in this book. After this, Devashish Chakraborty, Soma Chakraborty and Asmita Mishra translated the interviews of two people each.
At the last moment, Mr. Swarup Choube took over the responsibility of editing and proof reading. In this way this new book of mine came into your hands without me doing anything. In connection with these meeting talks, my disciples Manmohan Dogra, B.K. Alankrit and Divyanshu Birla also helped a lot. On the occasion of the publication of this book, I express my gratitude to all these people.
I also express my gratitude to the Internationally renowned tabla player Pandit Swapan Chaudhary (awarded with Padma Shri and Fellow, Central Sangeet Natak Akademi), Vidushi Sumitra Guha (awarded with Padma Shri and Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award) and Pandit Sajan Mishra (awarded with Padma Bhushan and Central Sangeet Natak Akademi
Award) for his best wishes.
Shri Madan Sachdeva ji has cooperated in the administration of this book with such promptness and interest. Many thanks and gratitude to him as well. While leaving, let me Manzil” is being published from Sangeet Natak Akademi (Delhi). Please take the time to give you one more information that along with this book, my another book “Mausiki Meri
read that too.
With respect,
Vijay Shanker Mishra
