26 अध्यायों में विभक्त तथागत गौतम बुद्ध के 423 धर्मपद, ढाई हजार वर्षों के बाद भी, प्रासंगिक हैं। इनकी प्रासंगिकता देश और काल की हर परिस्थिति में अभी भी बनी रहने वाली है। किसी राष्ट्र की सीमा तक धर्मपद सीमित नहीं हैं; ये सामान्यतः आस्तिक और नास्तिक संवाद का विषय भी नहीं हैं। सामान्य आचार और सभ्यता के मूलाधार नैतिकता की श्रेष्ठतम् अभिव्यक्ति इन पदों के माध्यम से होती है; यदि सामान्य आचार और नैतिकता को, धर्मपदों के निर्देशानुसार, व्यक्तिगत, सामाजिक अथवा राष्ट्रीय जीवन में अंगीकार किया जाए, तो निश्चित रूप से चहुँमुखी विकास का मार्ग प्रशस्त होगा। यही धर्मपदों की सर्वप्रमुख तथा सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण विशेषता है।

धर्मपद आम और खास, सभी, के लिए हैं; कहना न होगा मनुष्य के व्यावहारिक पक्ष को शुद्ध, श्रेष्ठ और कल्याणकारी बनाने वाले हैं। ये नैतिकता को सरल और सहज भाव से उच्चतर अवस्था तक ले जाने वाले हैं; तथा इस प्रकार मनुष्य को उसका लक्ष्य प्राप्त कराने में सहायक हैं इनकी परिधि सीमित नहीं; वे किसी एक व्यक्ति या वर्ग, क्षेत्र अथवा राष्ट्र की बपौती नहीं हैं। यही नहीं, धर्मपद ग्राहूय हैं, और ये अद्वितीय भी हैं। इनकी ग्राहयता और अद्वितीयता मात्र ही तथागत गौतम बुद्ध को ‘जगद्गुरु’ के रूप में स्थापित करने, अथवा उन्हें एशिया का महाप्रकाश घोषित करने के लिए पर्याप्त आधार हैं। आम तथा खासजन के लिए ग्रास्य, कल्याणकारी और पूर्ण उपयोगी होने के साथ ही धर्मपद दर्शन के दृष्टिकोण से भी अति सुदृढ़, उच्च अर्थों वाले और गहन विश्लेषण का विषय हैं। धर्मपदों में से एक भी ऐसा नहीं है, जो अति साधारण प्रतीत होने के साथ ही अपने में उच्च- दर्शन और भाव का समावेश न रखता हो। यदि अति संक्षेप में कहना हो तो धर्मपद आम और खास के लिए श्रेष्ठ नीति निर्देशक हैं, और साथ ही ये उच्चतम धर्म-दर्शन के आधारभूत तत्त्व भी हैं।

विश्वभर में, समय-समय पर, विभिन्न भाषाओं में धर्मपदों के अर्थ और अनुवाद प्रस्तुत किए गए हैं। यह कार्य कभी-कभी तो इतने महान विद्वानों और विषय-विशेषज्ञों द्वारा किया गया है, जिनकी बराबरी मेरे जैसा व्यक्ति तो सपने में भी नहीं कर सकता है। फिर भी मैंने अपनी लेखनी से धर्मपदों को पुनः पाठकों और जिज्ञासुओं के समक्ष रखने का प्रयास किया है।

वास्तव में ऐसा करने के पीछे कुछ थाई मित्रों की निरन्तर प्रेरणा रही है। गत एक दशक के दौरान मैं दर्जन भर से भी अधिक बार थाईलैण्ड गया हूँ। मैं जब-जब भी वहाँ गया, प्रत्येक बार मुझे किसी-न- किसी मित्र ने बुद्ध के मुख से निकले पवित्र धर्मपदों को सरल तथा ग्राह्य शैली में पुनः प्रस्तुत करने को प्रेरित किया। थाई भाइयों व मित्रों के निरन्तर आग्रह का ही अन्ततः परिणाम है कि मैं धर्मपदों को अपनी समझ से और अपनी शैली में, हिन्दी एवं अंग्रेजी भाषा में एक साथ प्रस्तुत करने की हिम्मत जुटा रहा हूँ। मुझे आशा है कि जिज्ञासु पाठकजन इस कार्य से लाभ उठा सकेंगे।

धर्मपद मूल रूप से पाली में हैं। पाली से इन्हें हिन्दी और अंग्रेजीभाषा में प्रस्तुत करने में मुझे स्वयं विशेष कोई कठिनाई नहीं रही है। लेकिन जिन मित्रों व सहयोगियों ने इस पाण्डुलिपि के निर्माण में मेरी सहायता की है, मैं उन सबका हार्दिक धन्यवाद करता हूँ। विशेषकर डॉ0 राणा पुरुषोत्तम कुमार सिंह, श्रीमती कमलेश कुमार, श्री मनोज कुमार ‘मनोज’, सुश्री रंजना चावड़ा तथा श्री नरेश सैनी पाण्डुलिपि को पढ़ने में सहायक रहे हैं, जिनका मैं आभारी हूँ। महान तथागत गौतम बुद्ध की महान, सदाबहार तथा कल्याणकारी शिक्षाएँ हमारा मार्ग-दर्शन करें, यह कामना करते हुए मैं इस कार्य को पाठकों को सौंपता हूँ।

Divided into twenty-six chapters, the four hundred twenty-three Dhammapadas of Mahatma Gautama Buddha, after two thousand five hundred years of their origin, are still fully relevant. Their relevance will continue to subsist according to time and space.

The Dhammapadas are not confined up to the frontiers of a particular nation. Generally they are not the subject of dialogue between theists and atheists. Through these padas, the best expression of universal conduct and morality, one of the fundaments of civilization, is revealed. If universal conduct and morality is practically adopted and imbibed at individual, social or national level in accordance with the sole directives of the Dhammapadas, an all-round development will be accelerated with certainty. This is the first and foremost characteristic of the Dhammapadas.

The Dhammapadas are meant for all, general and particulars. Needless to say, they make the practical aspect of man sanctified, super most and welfaristic. They lead morality to a higher plane in a simple and easy manner; and thus they prove to be welfaristic for human beings to reach the goal. Their scope is not limited. They are not patrimony of a particular person, class, region or nation. Not only this, the Dhammapadas are well-worthy of acceptance for all, general and particulars; they are unique as well as comprehensive. Their cohesiveness and uniqueness is quite a sound basis to establish Mahatma Gautama Buddha as Jagatguru- a great teacher of the world, or the ‘Light of Asia’.

Simultaneous to this, the Dhammapadas are highly meaningful on the one hand, and they are a subject of intensive research in philosophy on the other. There is not a single Dhammapadas, in spite of being apparently appearing quite simple, which may not possess the highest meaning and philosophy. In brief, the Dhammapadas are the best directive principles for all, general and particular, and they are the basic elements of the highest philosophy of religion.

From time to time, interpretations and translations of the Dhammapadas have been presented in different languages all over the world. Some times this task is consummated by such great scholars and subject specialists that people like me can never contemplate to match with them even in a dream. Even then, I have tried to present the Dhammapadas before readers and others interested in them.

In fact for the last one decade I have been in Thailand for more than one dozen times where some of my friends urged me to accomplish the task of presenting the holy Dhammapadas preached by Lord Buddha in a simple and comprehensive manner. Eventually, I have attempted and the credit of the outcome goes to those Thai brothers and friends who inspired and encouraged me.

Now, I am presenting the work in Hindi and English languages at a time. I hope that the readers and those interested in subject will be immensely benefited through this work.
